First Place

The Deck Nerds

Partners: Bugh Inc., CAMO, & Fiberon

The Peninsula project was full of obstacles. The curve shape was not just done for appearance it was done with purpose. The homeowner wanted the largest deck possible to extend the length of the house. Due to the Coastal Area Management Act however, we were only allotted 200 square feet with a 6 foot right of way from the base of the steps to the dock. In order to achieve this, we literally cut some corners. We took square footage from the corners of the deck and added it where you see the curvatures. We also curved the stairs to follow the radius of the deck and continued the two-course picture frame to make a continuous flow. We wrapped the staircase with PVC in a board and batten pattern and created additional storage under the stairs. Riser and perimeter lights were added to illuminate the project. We used an Under Decking system to create a dry space above the outdoor kitchen which was built by The Coastal Craftsman. The colors were chosen to match the existing decking on house.

Looking for something different. Hated the traditional look of a square deck. Came up with a few designs and once we showed them the curved free flow with curved stairs design they were done. Framing the stairs was a challenge to meet the existing walkway.

Third Place

Casey Fence and Deck

Partners: CAMO & Deckorators

This project was designed and crafted for a recently retired admiral. They originally wanted a bluish shade decking but felt it would be overwhelming, so we used a bluish shade board, ripped it down and used it as accent strips in the unique, custom 5 board border, according to the mldecking manufacturer. This was the first deck ever built using this color combo. The husband pitched in, coordinated and installed the landscaping.
