NADRA Community: Code of Conduct
Thank you for being a part of the NADRA’s online community: NADRA Connect. NADRA Connect gathers a global network of deck and railing building professionals—as well as all professionals of the outdoor living industry—to connect and empower great ideas and great people, collaborate together, and inspire leadership and achievement within the industry.
To ensure that all members have the best possible experience on the platform, we have a few ground rules that we ask everyone to adhere to. This code applies equally to every person in the community. Please keep in mind that this isn’t necessarily an exhaustive list of things that you can’t do. Instead, this Code of Conduct is intended as a guide to foster an online space that enriches the professional lives of the community members.
Ground Rules
Be welcoming: We strive to be a community that welcomes and supports people of all backgrounds and identities. Please also extend the benefit of the doubt to newer guests and members — there is no such thing as a stupid question.
Be respectful: We won’t all agree all of the time, but when we disagree don’t let those disagreements turn into personal attacks. A community where people feel uncomfortable or threatened will not be a productive one. Instead, when having discussions in the online community, create productive conversations around the content being presented, not the person behind the content.
Be considerate of the purpose of the community; Use the community to communicate goals, challenges, constructive feedback, and questions. The community should be a place for continued learning and development as well as a place where you can get help on some of the challenges you are facing as a professional (solicitation without written consent by NADRA, is strictly prohibited).
Be careful when choosing your words: We are a community of professionals. Be kind to others. Harassment and other exclusionary behavior will not be tolerated. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Violent threats or language directed against another person
- Discriminatory jokes, language, or materials
- Defamatory or abusive language or materials
- Profane or illegal materials
- Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior
A good rule of thumb is to never post anything that you wouldn’t be comfortable with the world seeing or that you wouldn’t want anyone knowing came from you.
Post your discussions or documents in the most appropriate group or topic: Make reasonable efforts to ensure that posts and materials are allocated to the appropriate group or topic. This will prevent cluttering the community and make it easier for everyone to find the materials that they are looking for.

How did NADRA get started?
Deck builders and product manufacturer’s alike raised concerns at the 2004 DeckExpo over the compatibility of new generation wood treatments and fasteners. As a result, many realized the need for a unified industry voice. NADRA is that voice. The association is now an official not-for-profit corporation under the name of North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA).
What does NADRA do for the Industry?
NADRA helps the consumer by providing information on deck safety, design, and products through www.nadra.org, by responding to consumer inquiries, and through public relations campaigns such as its Deck Safety Month® Program and its Merit Award Program. These campaigns build consumer trust in this association and its members while at the same time encouraging the outdoor living lifestyle.
The Industry and NADRA must show that it cares not only about its members but also about the consumer. The consumer wants a beautiful deck that will enrich their family’s lives. They want it constructed from high quality but affordable materials. They want it installed efficiently, safely and properly. They want it done by professional and knowledgeable builders that they trust.
NADRA participates in code development to support both its supplier and deck builder members. Its efforts focus on sensible code development for consumer safety, and quality construction and materials standards.
Who joins NADRA?
NADRA is made up of deck builders, inspectors, manufacturers, dealers/distributors, lumberyards, wholesalers, retailers, and service providers to the deck and railing industry. By working together we can be one voice for the industry and deliver a clear message to the consumer and the code development bodies. NADRA serves as a trade association with emphasis on safe building practices, and deck safety.
What is Deck Safety Month?
In an effort to save lives and prevent injuries, the North American Deck and Railing Association, Inc. (NADRA) declared May as the first Deck Safety Month in 2006. Now in its second year, the purpose of the promotion is to increase public awareness of the necessity for regular inspection and maintenance of existing decks, and proper installation of new decks. 2007 marked the first year for the Terry Award, which was established in honor of Terry and Diann Dempsey for their tireless efforts in bringing the deck and railing industry together through DeckExpo and Professional Deck Builder Magazine.
