Hen-House Decks

Partners: CAMO Fastener, TimberTech, FastenMaster, Under the Sun

This project redefines what’s possible in deck design, combining creativity, precision, and craftsmanship to produce a one-of-a-kind inlay layout that stands apart from anything in the neighborhood. The goal was to move beyond the standard straight decking pattern and create a flowing, interwoven design that visually connects the entire space. Each board was carefully cut, aligned, and installed to form seamless geometric intersections, requiring exact measurements and advanced layout skills to maintain perfect symmetry and color balance.

What truly sets this project apart is how the inlay continues gracefully down the steps— a feature rarely seen and extremely difficult to execute. Carrying the pattern through elevation changes demanded exceptional accuracy to ensure the lines aligned perfectly from the deck surface to the stair treads and risers. This continuous design element ties the entire build together, creating a sense of motion and craftsmanship that few can replicate. Every cut, angle, and transition was meticulously planned and executed, resulting in a deck that is not only structurally sound but a true piece of art in outdoor living.

Our Mystic Sky project evolved considerably from its original conception. Clients paid a designer but it never had the “WOW” factor befitting the first house in a new development, Client wanted a showpiece. Aside from adding a few thousand low voltage LED diodes, maxing out 2-50 watt transformers, som custom trim features and a built in bar, we created the Mystic Sky inlay. Spanning 10 feet by 8 feet (never revealed the actual design), every aspect of this concept had personal meaning for me and unbeknownst, for the client too. Having just lost my mother, I designed something that would subtly glorify her memory. The center is actually a cross that blooms into a bright star. We added the triple bordered Diamond outline as Crown Jewel and the diagonal decking with 1500 lights signify Moms eternal beauty and bring the Mystic Sky inlay to life. Can’t forget the heartbeat of the lone recess light in the center. The real payoff cam on the big reveal, the clients bday. As we turned on the lights, pulled the tarp off the Mystic Sky, the 3 of us broke down in tears and hugs, sharing the deep symbolism of the design.

Third Place

Rough Ashlar Construction

This project that we took on was fairly outside of our radius but after getting to know the home owner, I was dead set on making their dream become a reality, with only two guys and four weeks of time, we were able to over deliver in a many areas of the deck such as a custom inlay, custom skirts details and very out of the box stair case.
