First Place

Wood Bully

Partner: Owens Corning Lumber

This deck showcases a complete alternative framing system built entirely from Owens Corning structural composite lumber—a material engineered for superior strength, straightness, and moisture resistance. Every element of the structure, including joists, beams, rim, ledger, and stair stringers, was constructed with OC Lumber to create a dimensionally stable, long-lasting frame that won’t warp, twist, or rot like traditional
wood.

The design required precise planning to support a multi-directional decking pattern and an integrated hot-tub zone while maintaining clean, level transitions throughout. All framing members were fastened using structural screws and connectors specifically approved for composite materials, ensuring a secure bond without the risk of splitting or corrosion.

The structure rests on helical piles to minimize ground disturbance and ensure consistent bearing in poor soil conditions. Above, the diagonal deck layout and central inlay highlight the accuracy and rigidity of the engineered framing system beneath. This build demonstrates how alternative framing can enhance both performance and aesthetics—reducing maintenance, extending longevity, and providing an uncompromising foundation for complex deck designs.

Ravin Builders

Nestled in a rural location, this client was replacing a deck on their Mid Century house and had a strong sense of the atmosphere they wanted to create. Asking us to bring their dream of a contemporary gathering space to life, we used materials that we knew would deliver not just the style they wanted, but also the longevity. Due to the low elevation, the rot-free properties of Owens Corning Composite Structural Lumber was the easy choice. The customer knew that they wanted some sort of detail in the decking, but relied on our sense of scale and knowledge of suitable material combinations to create a lattice inlay. With different zones for lounging, dining, and even bathing (via their outdoor shower), this space shows off the benefit of intentional design rather than simply building the biggest space the budget allows.

Outdoor Space Builders

Customer came to us looking to create a lasting impression:

  • First the new Ledgershield flashing system was used to make sure the house was
    plenty protected
  • OC lumber was used to create beautiful black frame that came with lasting quality
  • Decking was fully cortex screwed down to make sure decking stayed tight
  • Customer was not fond of multicolor decking or double picture frame, so we created a 2′ herringbone breaker detail.
  • Bent/ rabbited medallions and corners were fabricated to break up the black framing
  • Custom waterwall detail was used up the stair stringers
  • Timbertech Impression Rail was used to bring that black into the upper deck with a narrow width drink rail, so the decking did not sit wider than the posts
  • Being huge fans of hummingbirds, a taller segmented post was fabricated to hold the feeders with a flange to bring the post down to normal height.
  • Tru-Scapes RGB lighting was used to add a great glow to the project at night, while allowing them to change the colors, brightness, and tone of each light
  • Finally, river rock was placed under the deck to create a nice clean space
