This work of art used all 35 years of my deck building experience. The home was built on 14″ round wood piles driven to depth and the old deck was also built on the piles. The first of many challenges was that the original builder of the house framed the floor right through the side of the home on to exterior beams and piles. The piles were still usable but showing signs of aging so we made certain to address and to protect the reused beams and piles so they would never see any more moisture. The key to a successful build is in the details.

Using aluminum framing materials proved to be a challenge as there are several curves involved in the feature section of this amazing deck. We had to create new ways to apply our standard methods to a new wave of exterior products to create something amazing that I’ve never seen before- A compound curved, tilt back bench. I used all 25 years of my deck board bending experience to create a one off work of art.

The railing is also mind blowing- A 12′ radius curved stainless top rail!

Zoning restrictions and complex rooflines made this project a structural and design challenge from the start. The homeowners wanted an open, organic look—something that felt architectural yet fluid—not a single boxed-in roof. The solution was a series of curved pergolas and roof forms that appear woven together, creating a sculptural composition that feels both intentional and effortless.

Every detail followed the curve: from the deck’s flowing perimeter to tight-radius fascia and railing lines that soften the home’s angular architecture. The design elevates the back of the house, adding warmth and dimension while maintaining visual harmony.

High ceilings lend a sense of grandeur without overwhelming the scale of the property, and solid skirting grounds the structure with a traditional finish. The result is an outdoor space that balances engineering precision with artistic form—an elegant interplay of curves, height, and proportion that transforms a constrained site into a distinctive architectural statement.

At Random Winds Bluff, this 1,500-square-foot alternative deck was designed to create a multi-functional outdoor retreat that connects every level of the home. The upper deck serves as a dining and entertainment zone complete with a retractable awning, offering shade and comfort while maintaining an open, airy feel. From here, guests can overlook the lower living spaces and enjoy seamless transitions between cooking, lounging, and relaxing.

Down below, a fully watertight area includes a covered grilling zone, and a spacious bar area—perfect for year-round use, even in the rain. A custom spiral staircase elegantly links the two levels, enhancing both functionality and design flow. With defined areas for the bar, hot tub, and upper eating zone, and three custom TV cabinets, this deck combines craftsmanship, convenience, and visual harmony to deliver a resort-style experience at home.
