When did you first get involved with this industry? Childhood—my summer “outreach program” involved cleaning up my Dad’s job sites.

What inspired you to join NADRA?  I attended my first deck expo in 2007 and while there I met fantastic people, many of whom I still consider friends 10 years later. My membership to NADRA provides networking, education, and resources that have been a large factor in growing my business and career, and the friendships are priceless.

What was the first thing you ever built? During the summer of seventh grade, I pooled money from my friends and had my first contracting job building a half-pipe skateboard ramp. Soon after, a concussion ended my skateboarding career, but building always stuck with me.

We want to get to know you, please tell us a little about your business: Once I found my niche in deck building, I refocused my company to specialize in decks and custom outdoor projects. This year, Deck and Basement Company celebrates 16 years of business. We have become one of the largest deck builders in the state of Minnesota, completing 275 decks in 2016. We run a successful deck program for national home builders as well as a custom division focused on outdoor living environments and basement finishing. The solid team of professionals at Deck and Basement Company are my greatest asset.

In 2014, I formed a second business, ProDeck Supply, a specialty lumberyard offering premium deck materials to contractors and homeowners. We have developed a Deck Kit program which allows our customers to order a deck and stair package by size. We offer eight different sizes that come complete with premium materials cut to size and ready to assemble. This allows our clients to keep waste off the job site and keep crews building faster.

How do you define success? My wife and my sons telling me they are proud of me.

What advice would you like to share with fellow members that you have learned in your career? You will never know everything or always be right. There is rarely a day that goes by where I do not learn more about my industry; the guys that claim to “know it all” rarely do. There is never a job that is more important than family.

What would you do for a career if you weren’t doing this? Professional skateboarder…definitely a professional skateboarder.

A little more about Pat:  I am blessed with a fantastic team of professionals that have helped grow both Deck and Basement Company, and now ProDeck Supply. Both businesses I run with my wife Julie. Without her support, none of this would be possible. Someday I hope to pass this on to my sons, who enjoy coming in on the weekends to work with dad and ride the forklifts. In my spare time, I can be found cheering on my kids at different activities or sneaking away on a vacation with family.
