FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WINCHESTER, Va., October 13, 2026 – Every great home starts with a strong foundation – even when its residents spend most of their lives in the treetops. Continuing a partnership spanning more than 15 years, Trex Company, the world’s leading brand of wood-alternative decking, railing and fencing, recently donated Trex Transcend® decking to help take the Sacramento Zoo’s orangutan habitat – and the guest experience – to new heights.
Designed around the orangutans’ natural behaviors, the updated habitat features new, elevated pathways, climbing structures and shaded resting platforms constructed with Trex Transcend® decking. Known for its proven durability and 100% submersible design, the decking resists stains*, scratches, fading** and mold, making it well suited to changing weather and the daily wear and tear of an active animal habitat.
The donated materials were supplied by Berco Building Materials, the zoo completed the renovation in support of its primate care team, giving the animals greater opportunities to climb, explore and interact with their surroundings while making daily care and habitat management easier.
“The well-being of our animals is always our guiding priority,” said Matt McKim, Chief Animal Programs Officer for the Sacramento Zoo. “This renovation was thoughtfully designed to better support the way orangutans naturally move, rest and spend time above the ground. Every element was intentionally designed to promote both their physical and behavioral well-being.”
The orangutan project builds on a long-standing collaboration between Trex and the Sacramento Zoo. Over the years, Trex products have been selected for both guest-facing spaces and animal habitats because of their exceptional durability and low-maintenance performance. In addition to the orangutan exhibit, Trex decking is featured in the okapi and alligator habitats, while Trex® Railing is installed throughout the cheetah exhibit.
“Animal habitats are among the toughest environments for any building material,” continued McKim. “Our animals climb on these structures every day. They claw them, chew them and subject them to constant wear. Compared to traditional wood, Trex simply holds up better and requires far less maintenance, allowing our team to spend less time replacing materials and more time focused on caring for the animals.”
“The Sacramento Zoo has trusted Trex products for years, and we’re honored to continue supporting its mission,” said Noelle Hand, Channel Marketing Manager for Trex Company. “Trex is performance-engineered for your life outdoors – and in this case – that life happens to include a few very happy orangutans. It’s rewarding to see our decking help create an enriching habitat for the animals while giving zoo staff more time to focus on their care.”
In addition to delivering long-lasting performance, Trex decking also supports the Sacramento Zoo’s broader sustainability goals. Made from 95% recycled and reclaimed materials, Trex decking aligns with the zoo’s commitment to responsible resource management while delivering decades of low-maintenance performance without the need for sanding, staining or sealing. As one of North America’s largest recyclers of plastic film, Trex has upcycled more than 6.4 billion pounds of waste plastic since its founding.
Today, the renovated habitat offers orangutans a more dynamic place to live while giving visitors an even closer connection to one of the world’s most remarkable great apes. It’s the latest example of how thoughtful design, durable materials and long-standing partnerships can come together to support both animal care and conservation.
