It was nice to see everyone at the The Ivy in Atlanta for the most recent NADRA meeting. Several guests were in attendance, as well old friends, and it was great to spend some time catching up. Thanks to everyone who made it out during this busy part of the year.
At the business session, representatives from the three major chemical suppliers for pressure treatment visited and held a Q&A panel for NADRA members to gather information about the current AWPA Standard changes. It also gave everyone a chance to voice concerns that have arisen over the past few years.
One issue that came up was the effect an underdeck might have on decking, particularly regarding how systems which close in the underside of here joists might create ground-level conditions for joists built with above-ground lumber. It is an interesting question to ask, but not all underdeck systems are the same, and many are designed to address these types of issues. To help clear away some of the misconceptions about underdecks, her are some things to remember.
Underdecks have come a long way from the days of screwing track systems and locking panels directly into the joists, causing debris buildup and restricting water flow. Many underdeck systems now hang below the joists, allowing for more accurate pitch to allow water flow through the system. The additional space taken by dropping below the joists also reduces the likelihood of debris accumulation and allows for more air flow to keep the system dry. Some systems even offer the option of ventilation to increase airflow.
Many systems also offer ways of cleaning the system out, whether it is from panels that pop up to allow access to the interior, or systems where entire panels can be removed independently. Most of these are designed with the consumer in mind so that people can maintain the systems themselves without being hostage to a repair tech’s schedule.
The important thing is helping people understand that when it comes to their homes, something that is out of sight should not be out of mind. Educating our customers on the various means and ways of drying in their patios to increase their useable living space also means stressing the importance of all aspects of home maintenance. Properly cared for, a good underdeck system should do nothing but enhance the living space and add enjoyment to the home.
