Quotes from NADRA Members and Deck Safety Ambassadors
Megan Magana, Deck Expo: “As North America’s leading deck and railing event, Deck Expo is committed to promoting safety standards and best practices that protect homeowners and enhance the reputation of our professional community. NADRA’s initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to showcase the latest in decking products and educate industry professionals, ultimately contributing to safer outdoor spaces across the continent. By supporting this campaign, we’re not only fostering a culture of safety but also demonstrating our dedication to the long-term success and sustainability of the decking industry.”
Tommy and Tara Holstein, Solid Ground Construction and Design: “At Solid Ground, safety is the foundation of every outdoor space we build. Partnering with NADRA’s Deck Safety initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to create beautiful, lasting structures that families can enjoy with confidence. We’re proud to support an effort that raises awareness, promotes education, and encourages proper deck inspections across the industry.”
Chance Baker, Armstrong Construction: “We are a family owned and operated business, so family is everything to us. We have always, and will always continue to make the safety of the families we build for our top priority.”
Joe Hagen, All Decked Out: “Deck safety is extremely important to our company because we believe in ensuring our clients have safe decks even if we weren’t the original builder, we will help them to repair their issues or rebuild in a manner that ensures their family’s safety for many years to come. There are too many DIYers and contractors out there that are not building to code and we want to see that stop not only to protect the public but also our industry’s reputation!”
Ian Holmes, Holmes Custom Renovations: “At Holmes Custom Renovations, safety is at the core of everything we do. NADRA’s Deck Safety Initiative is incredibly important to our business because it aligns with our commitment to protecting families and enhancing outdoor living spaces that stand the test of time. As a company that specializes in custom decking, we see firsthand how critical proper construction, regular inspections, and public awareness are in preventing accidents and ensuring structural integrity. Participating in the Deck Safety Campaign allows us to educate our clients and our community while reinforcing industry standards that keep everyone safe.”
Bruce and Judy Verblaauw, NJ Decks and Railings: “We try to educate consumers on the importance of deck safety. So many people think that their existing framing is still good when it is no longer up to code or built poorly.”
Zachary Grist, Piedmont Decks and Outdoor Living: “A beautiful deck means nothing if it isn’t safe”
Ovi Smalberger, 4th Generation Construction Inc.: “Enjoying your outdoor space should be stressless and safe.”
Karli Yeomans, LumberCon: “Deck Safety Month is important to LumberCon because it reinforces the core values behind our product: safety, durability, and long-term performance. Our prestressed concrete planks offer structural reliability, ignition resistance, and a Class A fire rating—making them a trusted choice for building safer, stronger, more sustainable outdoor spaces.”

May is Deck Safety Month®
Each year, NADRA raises awareness about the importance of checking your deck through a national deck safety campaign.
NADRA’s Deck Safety Campaign creates an opportunity to: Educate. Inspect. Correct; ultimately, helping to prevent injuries and bringing an awareness to the importance of regular deck inspections.
“Your roof has a life expectancy. Your windows have a life expectancy. What about your deck?” Says Michael Beaudry, executive vice president of NADRA. “Consider the snowfall accumulations from just this past year. These heavy loads cause additional stress on outdoor structures and create a need to evaluate. It’s time to Check Your Deck®!” READ MORE
The evaluation/ inspection of residential decks requires special knowledge, expertise and experience because of the possibility of the gradual deterioration of structural materials from water, climate factors, and corrosion of structural fasteners and connectors. In addition to structural materials, numerous deck elements such as guardrails, handrails, lighting, stairs, and landings may not meet current safety standards as the building codes are updated on a recurring basis, typically three years. A professional inspector should thoroughly examine your deck for occupant safety to ensure the deck is safe for future use.
We recommend ASHI-certified home inspectors or a knowledgeable deck builder for inspections of older decks. Our NADRA member deck builders are required to adhere to a code of ethics and comply with state licensing and insurance requirements. This brings peace of mind to homeowners using NADRA members.”
