Deck builders and product manufacturer's alike raised concerns at the 2004 DeckExpo
over the compatibility of new generation wood treatments and fasteners. As a result,
many realized the need for a unified industry voice. NADRA is that voice. The association
is now in its fourth year as a 501(c)6 not-for-profit corporation.
NADRA Mission Statement
The mission of the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) is to provide a
unified source for the professional development, promotion, growth, and sustenance of the
Deck and Railing building industry in North America so that members can exceed the
expectations of their customers.
NADRA Members
NADRA is made up of deck builders, manufacturers, dealers/distributors, wholesalers,
retailers, and service providers to the deck and railing industry. By working together we can be
one voice for the industry and deliver a clear message to the consumer and the code development
bodies. NADRA serves as a trade association with emphasis on safe building practices,
and deck safety.
Consumer Focus
The growth of the outdoor living industry is bring families and friends together in a
safe atmosphere at home, encouraging family time. These consumers want beautiful decks
that will enrich their families lives. They want them constructed from high quality but affordable
materials. They want them installed efficiently, safely and properly. They want their decks
constructed by professional and knowledgeable builders that they can trust.
NADRA helps the consumer by providing information on deck safety, design, and products
through www.nadra.org, by responding to consumer inquiries, and through public relations
campaigns such as its Deck Safety Month® Program and its Merit Award Program. These
campaigns build on the consumer knowledge base, and promote the outdoor living lifestyle.
NADRA is regularly interviewed for publications such as Sunset Magazine, Good
Housekeeping, and other mainstream consumer publications.
NADRA works to keep members informed of product and code development through its website,
through Professional Deck Builder Magazine (NADRA has four pages in each issue of this
bi-monthly trade publication - circulation 25,000), and its quarterly member newsletter. NADRA
also actively publishes articles for a variety of other trade publications in an effort to raise the
bar on the deck and railing industry by informing all of the players (deck builders, manufacturers,
dealers, distributors, retailers and wholesalers) of important facts and information affecting the
industry.
Community Projects
- Deck Safety Month/Deck Safety
In an effort to save lives and prevent injuries, the North American Deck and Railing Association,
Inc. (NADRA) declared May as the first Deck Safety Month in 2006. Now in its fifth year,
the purpose of the promotion is to increase public awareness of the necessity for regular
inspection and maintenance of existing decks, and proper installation of new decks.
- Deck For A Soldier®
The NADRA Deck For A Soldier® is a public service project based on member donation of labor and
materials to a deserving person or organization. The "Deck for a Soldier" Program
benefits a member of the U.S. armed forces returning from a tour of duty.

- Education - Certificate Courses
NADRA believes that the best deck contractors are educated ones. It is in the midst of creating
a full slate of courses for its members and for non-members attending the annual trade show,
DeckExpo, as well as education to be provided at regional levels and online. Designation courses
were first at DeckExpo 2007 in Las Vegas (Deck Restoration, and Project Management). DeckExpo
2010 in Baltimore will see two different NADRA courses that include certification for the subject
matter upon successful completion of a test. Simpson Strong-Tie is providing a course called
Deck Framing Connections, while DeckTools Software offers "Design Software to Increase Sales
and Efficiency. We continue to work to develop education that will directly benefit the builders and
raise awareness of available products. Also in development are courses directed to building
inspectors to educate them on how to properly inspect a deck.
Industry Speaking Engagements
NADRA participates in trade show educational programs by offering to speak on a variety of
subjects that work toward bringing awareness and growth to the industry. In particular, NADRA
has spoken at outdoor living trade shows such as the Pool & Spa Show, Hearth, Patio & Barbeque
(HPBA) show, and the American Wood Preservers Association (AWPA) on topics ranging from
industry trends, pressure treated lumber as used by deck builders, and encouraging retailers to
create relationships with deck contractors to build up their businesses.
Code Development
NADRA is active in the code development arena. We attend and participate on committees of
concern to the industry such as the International Code Council - Code Technical Committee,
Climbable Guards Study Group. NADRA also has member participation in several code related
bodies such as ASTM, ICC, and ICC-ES. NADRA participates in code development to support
both its supplier and deck builder members. Its efforts focus on sensible code development for
consumer safety, and quality construction and materials standards.
Local Chapters
NADRA has six official regional chapters at this time.
Several others are expected to come online during 2010. Chapters provide an opportunity for builders and suppliers to meet face to
face and work on helping each other improve their businesses. Their meetings are directed to a
combination of networking and education.
Revenue
Most of NADRA's revenue comes from membership dues. NADRA has nearly 300 members.
About half of them are deck builders with the rest being suppliers to the industry. Deck Builder
dues run $350 a year, while supplier dues are $500, $1,000, or $2,500 depending upon size of
the company. Branch members, usually reps or employees, are welcome for a small membershp fee of $100 provided their
company is a national member.
Expenses
NADRA's largest expenses include the cost of managing the membership roster, the Deck Safety
Program, the annual trade show (DeckExpo), and also travel for speaking engagements, regional
chapter formation, education planning and code development efforts.
